Summary

If you could read my mind, you wouldn't be smiling。

Samantha McAllister looks just like the rest of the popular girls in her junior class。 But hidden beneath the straightened hair and expertly applied makeup is a secret that her friends would never understand: Sam has Purely-Obsessional OCD and is consumed by a stream of dark thoughts and worries that she can't turn off。

Second-guessing every move, thought, and word makes daily life a struggle, and it doesn't help that her lifelong friends will turn toxic at the first sign of a wrong outfit, wrong lunch, or wrong crush。 Yet Sam knows she'd be truly crazy to leave the protection of the most popular girls in school。 So when Sam meets Caroline, she has to keep her new friend with a refreshing sense of humor and no style a secret, right up there with Sam's weekly visits to her psychiatrist。

Caroline introduces Sam to Poet's Corner, a hidden room and a tight-knit group of misfits who have been ignored by the school at large。 Sam is drawn to them immediately, especially a guitar-playing guy with a talent for verse, and starts to discover a whole new side of herself。 Slowly, she begins to feel more "normal" than she ever has as part of the popular crowd 。 。 。 until she finds a new reason to question her sanity and all she holds dear。

Inspiring story about the ups and downs of mental well-being, it reminds me I am not crazy for my mental health problems and that life has ups and downs, friends come and go but everything happens for a reason, we are on this trail; it all works out in the end of the day。Reminds me he’s having mental illness can be hard and terrifying but does not have to be restrictive。 We have habits to unlearn, new behaviours to embody and wounds to heal。

Amazing。 I was hooked right from the start。 And the plot twist。 Oh the plot twist。 I stared in space for about five minutes after reading that, haha! This book is really well written, with so many great sentences (“it’s not that I don’t have the time, it’s that the time is not right”, “it feels freeing to say the words out loud, and as I do, it occurs to me how true they are”) and so many more amazing little details in the writing that make the book awesome。Really deserves these five stars

takes on difficult subjects very well, it’s very relaxing to read, however not at all boring。 it has a plot twist that i would never have expected, and has extremely likeable characters。

The new ones I mean, the ones she chose。 The way everyone was given a personality, and no one was bland。 I was so glad when she left the terrible losers she considered a friend。 Yes Sam! Leave the back-stabbing bitches! Its well written and everyone should give this is a chance, it being different from usual YA books。 。。。more

This 355-page hardcover book was really not my cup of coffee。First of all, I was really expecting more from this book。 The blurb could be stated as one of the best parts of this book。 From beginning to end it is just any cliche movie where the girl has a problem and then this main character, a handsome and "all over perfect", guy comes in and saves the day。 Cures the girl of whatever problem she has and they fall in love。 The。 At。 Most。 Best。 Storyline。 Note the sarcasm。 I'm actually not trying This 355-page hardcover book was really not my cup of coffee。First of all, I was really expecting more from this book。 The blurb could be stated as one of the best parts of this book。 From beginning to end it is just any cliche movie where the girl has a problem and then this main character, a handsome and "all over perfect", guy comes in and saves the day。 Cures the girl of whatever problem she has and they fall in love。 The。 At。 Most。 Best。 Storyline。 Note the sarcasm。 I'm actually not trying to be mean or anything but for a realistic fiction YA book, isn't it a little too fictional?Sure love can make people feel things: happy, loved, safe, but it cannot fix all problems。 It's like saying, to save this girl from the disease all she needs to do is to fall in love。 That's not how it works。 OCD is not able to be cured by "falling in love", sure they can help with giving advice, but it doesn't just "fix" it。 Of course, readers want romance and just everything that makes people happy in a book but sometimes it's too much。There really is no point to make it so lovey-dovey because sometimes people just need to face the truth and that's just how life is。 I would like to believe this book is not meant for people younger than the age of 5。 Even the author said, "My publisher recommends it for readers 12 and up。" I think that people 12 and up are able to handle the truth of someone not being cured。 I mean people at the age of 10 now are reading about people dying and everything that just doesn't work out in life。Yes in a romance book people want people falling in love and the characters changing each other for the better but this book like stopping someone from having diarrhea。 You can give them hot water and fruits to get it out of their system but you cant just peck their forehead and be like "it'll be all better" and they stop pooping。 Everyone would love it if that could happen but it just doesn't。Feelings for those that actually have OCD in real life, it kind of belittles their problems。 Romanticizing something many are struggling with and have is not something good。 One it could hurt themselves on how they think about their struggles and two, how others think about what they feel and have。Not only does it romanticize way too much, but the story is also just really plain。 There is nothing that surprises the reader or makes the reader catch the ball that they didn't know coming at their face。 Reading this book, readers can literally see every single ball being thrown at them in slow motion。I'm not saying everyone should just hate on this book and throw it in a bonfire。 It's just that I didn't personally enjoy it at all and I'm just using this space to rant all I want because no one can stop me。 I mean if you want to read a book that's really colorless, by all means, read it。 But if you want a book filled with fireworks and euphoria, turn around and go find another book。Personally, I would rate this book a 5/10 being nice, it wasn't vomiting bad it was just really not enjoyable。 。。。more

This book was great in a lot of ways— I loved the focus on therapy and Sam’s relationship with Sue (even though the way Sue was described reflected racial stereotypes once or twice) and the representation of high school felt real。 I was most disappointed with the representation of OCD— not that it was inaccurate, but it was milder/different than advertised。 I thought the book was about someone with really debilitating OCD thoughts, but I mostly saw her social anxiety and her obsession/rituals wi This book was great in a lot of ways— I loved the focus on therapy and Sam’s relationship with Sue (even though the way Sue was described reflected racial stereotypes once or twice) and the representation of high school felt real。 I was most disappointed with the representation of OCD— not that it was inaccurate, but it was milder/different than advertised。 I thought the book was about someone with really debilitating OCD thoughts, but I mostly saw her social anxiety and her obsession/rituals with the number 3。 Based on my personal experience and the experiences of other people who have written about their OCD, I expected Sam’s thoughts to be really frightening and disturbing at times。 Although that of course doesn’t need to be dwelt on, her thought at the start of the novel about wanting to cut up the roses felt really mild from someone with a case that was supposed to be as bad as hers。 I guess I would have liked the author to show how repetitive and exhausting Pure-O can be, since it tends to make you fixate on a certain theme for a long time。 And what were the compulsions that Sam used to try and control her thoughts about her friends? Avoidance? It felt like her situation with them was more about her having general anxiety and them being awful, whereas I hoped to see the way Pure-O specifically affected those relationships。 I thought that the section where Sam obsessed about AJ’s old girlfriend and researched her felt really realistic, and I did get some sense of her obsessive need to be forgiven (although for someone with OCD I was surprised her guilt didn’t bother her for longer)。 Some vague spoilers below:Finally, I’m conflicted about the plot twist late in the book。 From a dramatic perspective I really liked it, but I felt that it could be misleading for people who don’t know much about OCD, especially since we never even get a theory from Sue about what’s going on。 The author did a ton of research on OCD and I liked how the reveal with *spoiler* impacted Sam, but it felt like a serious symptom of mental illness was being used as a plot device and not taken seriously。 I really think the author should have shown Sue and Sam talking about what that reveal meant for Sam’s diagnosis, medication, etc。 in a much more significant way, because that’s a really significant symptom to have for so long。 Overall, the messages and representation in this book were really good, but it wasn’t exactly as relatable/raw as I had hoped with Sam’s OCD thoughts and compulsions。 I know some other books are supposed to be better at portraying how terrifying OCD can really be, but that just wasn’t this one。 It had a lot of other great emotional depth, though! 。。。more

This book was great and addictive so I read it in one sitting which hasn’t happened in a while so that was great! I wasn’t really into the book at first, but I decided to keep reading it anyways。 Let me tell you I absolutely loved it。 It talks abt mental health like depression and OCD。 Sam, the main character, struggles with OCD and wants to keep it from ppl but then she finds a place where she can be herself and the book gets better from there。

I thought this was a very good representation of how sometimes we need to believe that other people are leading us in the right direction when in reality we are actually the ones making the decisions。 it also contained a strong betrayal of how some mental health diseases-in this case OCD- can contort our mind making us susceptible to the inability to refrain from impulses and desires, and how it can create fantasies to help us deal with things。

Every Last Word was a simplistic but effective and moving story。 I don’t really have many (if any) serious complaints about this read, it was engaging without seeming too romanticized, which is always appropriate in plot-lines that heavily feature mental illness。 Sam as a character was likeable and refreshing, bringing a breath of fresh air to the usual portrayal of mentally ill youth being isolated and socially awkward。 Including her past dynamics with the other characters was a really clever w Every Last Word was a simplistic but effective and moving story。 I don’t really have many (if any) serious complaints about this read, it was engaging without seeming too romanticized, which is always appropriate in plot-lines that heavily feature mental illness。 Sam as a character was likeable and refreshing, bringing a breath of fresh air to the usual portrayal of mentally ill youth being isolated and socially awkward。 Including her past dynamics with the other characters was a really clever way to portray her development as she moved away from her “old life”。 My only complaint regarding Sam is the oversimplification of her severe and often debilitating OCD; this novel had a huge opportunity to hit on insecurities that are deeper than surface level when Sam was opening up to her peers。 Now on to AJ。。。。 what a missed opportunity。 After how rounded out Sam’s character was, I was hoping for a bit more depth from the love interest。 The inclusion of a stutter was clever, but was a missed opportunity to give AJ more depth in his insecurities and maybe even cause some conflict?? I don’t know, I just wish they had done a bit more than OCCASIONALLY bring up the stutter to remind us all as the audience that it was still there。All this said, their dynamic was SWOON WORTHY and hit on my favourite trope:💕enemies to lovers💕Overall I quite enjoyed this read, and I especially think the author deserves credit for writing such a realistic and well researched book, when it would have been so easy to gloss over the “ugly” bits of mental illness。 TLDRSimplistic but effective, great dynamics between the love interests, and fast paced。 The portrayals of mental illness (OCD) were respectful and realistic, and added depth to the protagonist。 I recommend this book to basically anyone that enjoys romance and contemporary 。。。more

I liked this book, but i also felt like something was missing, i kept compering it to 'The perks of being a wallflower' which is one of my favourite books, although they are really different。 I can't speak for the meantal health accuracy, but i really liked how this book depicted friends growing apart。 I might have really loved it if i read it when i was younger。 I liked this book, but i also felt like something was missing, i kept compering it to 'The perks of being a wallflower' which is one of my favourite books, although they are really different。 I can't speak for the meantal health accuracy, but i really liked how this book depicted friends growing apart。 I might have really loved it if i read it when i was younger。 。。。more

“WTF” was the first thought that went through my mind as I closed the book for the last time。 It has me mixed up between so many emotions。 A must read in my opinion, especially when it comes to OCD, depression, anxiety etc。。。 However, the illnesses do sometimes feel a little romanticized, but overall I would say it is a pretty relatable novel。 Easy to read。 Definitely recommend。
